I can talk from personal experience in the case of both cars. Both cars are extremely reliable, but I've heard old Jetta's had electrical problems so in that sense, I would say the Civic is more reliable because you cannot really fault it in anything. TL;DR: My 2012 Jetta Sportwagen TDI has 134,000 miles. The Diesel Particulate Filter (dpf) light has been on in my dash for a couple months. Dealer says it needs replacement, which will cost $3,200. If you dont mind the dropoff in resale I'd recommend the Jetta. Oh and Cvt vs actual transmission.The manual states I can use regular too but premium is recommended. The fuel door states that I should only use octane minimum 91 or 94, which is premium. I get worse gas milage with regular because I tend to compensate for lack of power by accelerating harder.
